Frédéric François Chopin - (1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849) was a Polish composer, virtuoso pianist, and music teacher of French-Polish parentage. He was one of the great masters of Romantic music.

For most of his life, Chopin suffered from poor health; he died in Paris at age 39 and was buried at Pére Lachaise Cemetery.

The International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition, often referred to as the Chopin Competition, is a prestigious piano competition taking place in Warsaw , initiated in 1927 and held every five years since 1955. It is one of few competitions devoted entirely to the oeuvre of a single composer.

The first competition was founded by the eminent Polish pianist and pedagogue Jerzy Żurawlew.
